Is this the last ever V12 AMG S-Class saloon?

At a time when the trend is for smaller, more economical engines, the 6.0 litre V12 which powers the Mercedes-AMG S 65 is somewhat incongruous.

While its 620 bhp (463 kW / 630 PS) and 1,000 Nm (737 lb/ft) of peak torque are mightily impressive, 19.9 mpg (14.2 l/100km) plus CO2 emissions of 325 g/km on the combined cycle are less agreeable. Such poor efficiency is probably one reason why this super saloon is about to be retired.

However, before the S 65 disappears, twelve-cylinder aficionados have the opportunity to buy a special Final Edition model. It features Obsidian Black paintwork together with a distinctive matte bronze finish for the 20” wheels, air inlet grilles and various other exterior elements.

The theme continues inside, where black Nappa leather is matched with copper-coloured stitching and carbon fibre trim pieces. Even the ambient lighting has a copper hue.

As well as a Magic Sky Control panoramic roof, the standard equipment list includes the First Class package with fully-adjustable individual rear seats. A bespoke indoor car cover is thrown in, too.

Production of the S 65 Final Edition will be limited to 130 examples.
