Ford creates the Transit Smart Energy Concept

While there’s nothing especially unusual about a battery-electric van, the Transit Smart Energy Concept is interesting because it explores innovative ways to overcome range anxiety.

This unique vehicle uses the same technology as the recently-announced Transit StreetScooter Work XL developed for Deutsche Post. That means the specification includes an electric motor producing up to 120 bhp (90 kW / 122 PS) and 276 Nm (203 lb/ft) of torque, plus a battery pack with a maximum capacity of 76 kWh. Exact figures haven’t been revealed, though.

Ford chose to build the Transit Smart Energy Concept as a ten-seat minibus, because such a configuration typically uses various energy-sapping ancillaries a lot. In particular, a traditional climate control system could apparently reduce range by as much as half in cold weather.

Therefore, a novel heat pump is fitted which draws waste heat from the powertrain components, the outside air and the air inside the cabin. Electricity requirements for heating are consequently slashed by 65%, thereby extending driving range by a claimed 20%.

Not needing to constantly warm up the interior also helps. Ceiling and floor insulation, double glazing and a halfway-opening power-sliding passenger door all prevent unnecessary drops in temperature. Furthermore, six roof-mounted solar panels are connected to a separate 12 volt battery that feeds the heated seats, ambient lighting and mobile device sockets.

As a result, the Smart Energy Concept can travel for a fairly reasonable 93 miles (150 kilometres) on a single charge. On-road trials are due to begin later this year.
