A-Class and B-Class plug-in hybrids launched

Mercedes-Benz has added three models to its EQ Power portfolio of electrified vehicles. The new A 250 e, A 250 e Saloon and B 250 e all share the same hybrid powertrain.

As well as a 158 bhp (118 kW / 160 PS) 1.3 litre, four-cylinder, petrol engine, this consists of a 100 bhp (75 kW / 102 PS) electric motor and an underfloor, water-cooled, 15.6 kWh, lithium-ion battery pack.

Total system output and torque are rated at 215 bhp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 450 Nm (332 lb/ft) respectively. Delivery to the wheels is via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Judging by the manufacturer’s specifications listed below, performance and fuel economy are certainly impressive. Real-world pure-electric range – as indicated by the WLTP figures – should be enough to cover most daily commuting distances.

Recharging times when plugged in vary according to the source being used. A dedicated 7.4 kW AC wallbox can replenish the battery from 10 to 100 percent capacity in 1 hour and 45 minutes, for instance. Alternatively, a public DC facility would need 25 minutes to get to 80 percent from the same starting point. Regenerative braking (with five settings) also provides top-ups while driving.

Sales of the three hybrids are due to begin later this year. UK prices have yet to be announced.
