BMW improves the 225xe Active Tourer

Advances in battery technology should mean that the upgraded 225xe Active Tourer is more appealing than its predecessor.

As before, the five-seat, all-wheel drive, plug-in hybrid MPV features a 1.5 litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that sends 134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS) to the front axle via a six-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the rear axle is powered by an 87 bhp (65 kW / 88 PS) electric motor. Total system output therefore remains at 221 bhp (165 kW / 224 PS) with 385 Nm (283 lb/ft) of torque.

However, the underfloor lithium-ion battery pack which supplies the aforementioned motor has grown in capacity from 7.7 to 10.0 kWh (without any physical size increase). This brings a couple of key benefits.

Firstly, range when running in pure electric mode has risen by over 25 percent to 35 miles (57 kilometres). A full recharge takes approximately five hours using a regular domestic supply, or a little over three hours with a BMW i Wallbox.

Secondly, overall efficiency is better. Average fuel economy is now rated at 134.5 to 148.6 mpg (2.1 to 1.9 l/100km) while CO2 emissions are 47 to 42 g/km. Performance is impressive too, as the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes only 6.7 seconds and the top speed is 125 mph (202 km/h).

One other notable change sees the arrival of an acoustic pedestrian warning system. Fitted as standard, this device activates at speeds of up to 18 mph (30 km/h) if electricity is the sole energy source.
