Upgrade parts available for the old Defender
Land Rover Classic, which focuses on the brand’s out-of-production models, has launched a selection of components for the 1994 – 2016 Defender.
The new range – intended to “deliver enhanced performance and on-road agility” – is being offered for both the Defender 90 and Defender 110. Essentially, there are four packages to choose from:
1. 18” ‘Sawtooth’ alloy wheels
They’re £432.00 each and fitting (for an extra charge) can take place at any Land Rover dealer. Alternatively, a full set of wheels and tyres retails for £4,068.00, but weirdly this option is only supplied via the two dedicated Land Rover Classic facilities in Coventry, England and Essen, Germany.
2. Suspension Upgrade Kit
Revised springs, dampers, anti-roll bars, links and bushes are claimed to deliver better ride comfort and dynamics. Parts-only prices for the 90 and 110 are £2,247.07 and £1,822.97 respectively, but any Defender pre-dating the 2007 model year isn’t eligible.
3. Handling Upgrade Kit
As well as the aforementioned ‘Sawtooth’ wheels and Suspension Upgrade Kit, this features the more effective brake discs, pads and calipers previously used on the Works V8 limited edition. Owners of the 90 will have to spend £10,391.47 to buy just the parts, while the equivalent 110 cost is £9,967.37.
4. Classic Works Upgrade Kit
The fourth tier is exclusively for 2012 model year vehicles or younger, as it combines the Handling Upgrade Kit with some improvements for the 2.2 litre TDCi engine. Indeed, output increases to 159 bhp (119 kW / 162 PS) and peak torque becomes 463 Nm (341 lb/ft), resulting in a higher top speed of 106 mph (170 km/h).
At £16,995 the Classic Works Upgrade Kit certainly isn’t cheap, but at least that figure includes fitting by Land Rover Classic in Coventry (and a ‘health check’ for the subject Defender). Special badges complete the modifications.
