BMW introduces the F 900 R and F 900 XR

BMW Motorrad has launched a couple of mid-size bikes that share a common foundation. They’re the F 900 R and the F 900 XR, which will compete respectively in the roadster and adventure sport segments.

Both models are based on a steel bridge frame with a bolt-on rear subframe and a lightweight plastic-welded fuel tank. Although the upside-down front fork and rear double-sided aluminium swing arm are common components, the F 900 XR has extra suspension travel to complement its more upright riding position.

A water-cooled, twin-cylinder, 895 cc engine produces 103 bhp (77 kW / 105 PS) plus 92 Nm (67 lb/ft) of peak torque. That output gets delivered via a six-speed gearbox and a chain final drive.

As well as a choice of Rain or Road riding modes, standard equipment includes Automatic Stability Control, full LED lighting, a height-adjustable saddle, a 6.5” colour TFT display and, for the F 900 XR, a moveable windscreen.

While prices have yet to be announced, prospective customers should be prepared to be tempted by the myriad cost options. Among the many available items are:
  • Riding Modes Pro – adds Dynamic and Dynamic Pro settings, along with Dynamic Traction Control, ABS Pro (an upgraded system that’s banking capable), Dynamic Brake Control (prevents unintentional application of the throttle when decelerating) and MSR (engine drag torque control – prevents rear wheel slip when applying the throttle or down-shifting abruptly)
  • Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment – automatically adjusts the rear suspension damping, has Road and Dynamic settings
  • Shift Assistant Pro – allows gear changes upwards or downwards without using the clutch lever
  • Headlight Pro – incorporates Adaptive Cornering Light to give better illumination around bends
  • Keyless Ride
  • Cruise control
  • Lowered suspension
