Hyundai creates a hydrogen truck concept

For this year’s North American Commercial Vehicle Show, Hyundai has built a Class 8 heavy-duty truck that’s powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The HDC-6 Neptune Concept is a signal that Hyundai’s ambitions for the United States extend beyond just offering passenger cars.

Given the distances and payloads involved, hydrogen fuel cells could become a practical method to electrify goods vehicles. Excessive downtime due to waiting for batteries to recharge isn’t an issue, for example.

However, as Hyundai readily admits, FCEV acceptance will be difficult to achieve without adequate refuelling facilities. Therefore, the Korean firm is prepared to work with other companies to establish the necessary infrastructure.

The HDC-6 Neptune tractor unit is being paired with a Hyundai Translead Nitro ThermoTech refrigerated trailer. Also a concept, it’s claimed to be lighter, quieter and more thermally efficient than anything currently on the market.
