The McLaren 620R is a road-going 570S GT4

To create the latest member of its Sports Series range, McLaren essentially made the 570S GT4 racing car street legal. The result is the 620R limited edition.

Special components include a very effective aerodynamics package. Dive planes are fitted at the front, plus the adjacent splitter, bumper and bonnet have all been redesigned to optimise air flow. At the rear, there’s a prominent wing that can be set to three different positions (but only by a McLaren dealer). Maximum downforce is 185 kg (407 lbs) at 155 mph (250 km/h).

A comprehensively upgraded chassis incorporates stiffer springs, stronger anti-roll bars, aluminium wishbones and coilover dampers that are manually adjustable for both compression and rebound. Braking is taken care of by carbon ceramic discs with forged aluminium calipers.

Multi-spoke centre-lock wheels – 19” front and 20” rear – are shod with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tyres. For track use, Pirelli slicks are available as an option.

Thanks to recalibrated ECU and turbocharger management software, the 3.8 litre V8 engine produces 611 bhp (456 kW / 620 PS) and 620 Nm (457 lb/ft) of peak torque. That increased output is delivered to the rear wheels via a seven-speed Seamless Shift Gearbox. One particularly clever feature is Inertia Push which, when in the Track driving mode, converts stored flywheel energy into a quick torque burst to give smoother up-shifts.

Just as important for performance and handling is a kerb weight of 1,386 kg (3,056 lbs). Achieving such relative lightness has involved some equipment sacrifices, though. For instance, the 620R doesn’t come as standard with carpets, air conditioning, satellite navigation or an audio player (but most of those items can be added free of charge if an owner really wants them).

Pace is certainly impressive, as evidenced by 0-62 mph (100 km/h) and 0-124 mph (200 km/h) times of 2.9 and 8.1 seconds respectively. The car’s top speed is 200 mph (322 km/h).

McLaren intends to build 350 examples of the 620R. While the regular list of colour schemes comprises Onyx Black, McLaren Orange or Silica White, customers will be able to choose a Senna GTR-inspired livery instead.

Prices in the UK start at £250,000 and deliveries are due to begin in February 2020.
