2021 Toyota Yaris Cross revealed

Toyota doesn’t currently offer a small SUV in Europe, but that situation is going to be fixed next year by the arrival of the all-new Yaris Cross. Like the recently-announced fourth-generation Yaris hatchback, it’s based on the company’s GA-B modular platform.

Indeed, both models share the same 2,560 mm (100.8”) wheelbase. However, the Yaris Cross is longer overall by 240 mm (9.4”), plus the ride height has been increased by 30 mm (1.2”) to provide slightly better ground clearance.

Power comes from a ‘self-charging’ (i.e. non-plug-in) hybrid system consisting of a 1.5 litre, three-cylinder, Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Maximum output is rated at 114 bhp (85 kW / 116 PS).

Significantly, Toyota has decided to offer AWD-i (intelligent all-wheel drive) as an alternative to front-wheel drive. This option, which is an electrical rather than a mechanical set-up, sends torque to the rear axle when only extra traction is required.

The Yaris Cross will be manufactured in France alongside the hatchback.
