Third-generation Genesis G80 unveiled

Genesis has revealed its all-new 2021 G80. Measuring 4,995 mm (196.7”) long, this luxury four-door saloon features a prominent ‘crest’ front grille and a tapering profile that visually merges the rear screen and boot lid.

Acoustic glass and improved sound insulation help to create a suitably hushed cabin environment. Occupants sit on leather-upholstered seats, with those in the back enjoying more space versus the previous model. To enhance ride comfort, Electronically Controlled Suspension with Road Preview uses a front-facing camera to detect and react to road surface imperfections.

The dashboard design purposely minimises the number of physical buttons which, depending on your preference, might not be a good thing. Instead, most of the car’s systems are ‘touch-and-write’ managed via the Genesis Integrated Controller and a centrally-mounted 14.5” infotainment screen. A 12.3” digital cluster takes the place of conventional instruments, plus a head-up display is fitted.

Naturally, there are plenty of driver aids. Particularly notable among them are Highway Driving Assist II (provides semi-autonomous functionality including lane changing), Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning (a novel device that employs artificial intelligence to mimic human driving characteristics) and Remote Smart Parking Assistant (allows perpendicular and parallel parking manoeuvres to be performed without anybody being inside the car).

Initially, Genesis is offering the G80 in either rear- or all-wheel drive guise with a choice of three turbocharged engines. Their power and torque outputs are:
  • 2.5 litre I4 petrol – 300 bhp (223 kW / 304 PS), 421 Nm (311 lb/ft)
  • 3.5 litre V6 petrol – 375 bhp (280 kW / 380 PS), 530 Nm (391 lb/ft)
  • 2.2 litre I4 diesel – 207 bhp (154 kW / 210 PS), 441 Nm (325 lb/ft)

Performance and efficiency should both benefit from a weight reduction of around 125 kg (275 lbs). That was primarily achieved by switching to aluminium for approximately one-fifth of the G80’s body structure.

Dealers in South Korea are already accepting orders, but North American market launches won’t happen until the second half of this year. Availability in Europe is still to be decided.
