2021 Bentley Bentayga unveiled

When it first appeared in late 2015, the Bentayga was noted for having somewhat challenging looks. A just-revealed comprehensive facelift improves things a great deal.

At the front, Bentley’s luxury SUV gains added presence thanks to a larger and more upright grille. Consequently, the LED headlights have been moved slightly further apart and they sit 30 mm (1.2”) higher than before. Extra visual interest is provided by a redesigned bumper.

Extensive changes at the rear end clearly involved significant bodywork alterations. A new full-width tailgate incorporates elliptical light clusters and a longer spoiler, but the numberplate has been moved down to the bumper. The only displeasing aspect is the unnecessary ‘Bentley’ wordmark across the back – a ‘winged B’ badge is all that’s needed.

Inside, the door trims and centre fascia have been refreshed, plus revised seats are claimed to offer better comfort and increased rear legroom.

Updated dashboard features include a configurable all-digital instrument cluster, an enhanced head-up display, and a high-resolution 10.9” infotainment touchscreen. Apple CarPlay joins Android Auto on the standard equipment list, while the My Bentley telematics suite benefits from an embedded SIM and additional services.

Initially, the 2021 model will only be available with a 4.0 litre petrol engine. This twin-turbocharged V8 delivers 542 bhp (404 kW / 550 PS) and 770 Nm (568 lb-ft) of peak torque via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

As a result, performance is impressive. The Bentayga can accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.5 seconds before eventually reaching 180 mph (290 km/h), for instance. However, 21.2 mpg (13.3 l/100km) and CO2 emissions of 302 g/km on the combined cycle indicate that efficiency isn’t brilliant.

Any prospective customers wanting lower fuel consumption figures should wait for the upcoming plug-in hybrid powertrain. A 6.0 litre W12 Speed version is also due soon.
