Lamborghini launches the Essenza SCV12
Buyers of the new Essenza SCV12 will, quite literally, become members of a very exclusive club. Production of this track-only model is being limited to only forty examples, plus Lamborghini intends to organise a series of ‘arrive and drive’ events at FIA Grade 1 circuits for Essenza owners. In between those outings, the cars can be stored in a purpose-built hanger in Sant’Agata Bolognese.
Developed by Lamborghini Squadra Corse, the Essenza features a naturally-aspirated V12 engine, a bespoke Capristo exhaust system, an X-trac sequential six-speed transmission and rear-wheel drive.
Output is claimed to be in excess of 818 bhp (610 kW / 830 PS). Although there aren’t any official performance stats available yet, a power-to-weight ratio of 1.66 PS per kilogram promises plenty of pace. Such a figure is possible thanks partly to the use of exotic materials – the monocoque is made from carbon fibre, for instance, while the wheels (19” at the front, 20” at the rear) are magnesium.
One area which received a lot of attention was the aerodynamics. Consequently, elements include a double front splitter arrangement, vertical fins mounted on the side sills, a huge diffuser at the back, and an adjustable rear wing. The result is 1,200 kg (2,645 lbs) of downforce at 155 mph (250 km/h).
Inside, an FIA-homologated race seat from OMP faces a multi-function steering wheel that incorporates the instruments and most of the switches.
Lamborghini hasn’t disclosed a price for the Essenza, but its target clientèle is unlikely to be overly concerned about affordability.
