Lyriq show car will become Cadillac’s first EV

Cadillac has offered a preview of how its first pure-electric vehicle is going to look. The Lyriq – which, unsurprisingly, is a crossover – features a high waistline, a wide stance, a broad ‘black crystal’ front grille and overly fussy rear-end styling.

General Motor’s latest modular EV platform underpins the Lyriq, and energy is stored in a low-cobalt ‘Ultium’ battery pack that’s expected to have a capacity of around 100 kWh. Exact specifications are yet to be announced, but Cadillac says range should be in excess of 300 miles (approximately 480 kilometres). 150 kW DC fast charging will be possible, too.

Interestingly, two different powertrain layouts have been developed. While the regular rear-wheel drive Lyriq has a single electric motor mounted towards the back, a quicker all-wheel drive version benefits from a second motor for the front axle. Their outputs and performance figures are unknown, though.

As befits a proper luxury car, an advanced active noise cancellation system is fitted to keep the interior quiet. Other notable technologies include an updated iteration of the Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance function, a ‘dual-plane’ head-up display, and a single configurable 33” LED screen that dominates the dashboard.

For the time being, Cadillac is remaining silent on the Lyriq’s launch date and pricing.
