Dacia’s Spring Electric won’t be sold in the UK

Dacia has confirmed that the Spring Electric is only going to be offered across continental Europe, so it won’t be available in either the UK or Ireland. Such news is disappointing, mainly because this all-new model promises to make pure-electric vehicle ownership more affordable.

Measuring 3,734 mm (12’ 3”) long, 1,622 mm (5’ 4”) wide and 1,516 mm (4’ 11”) high, the Spring Electric is undoubtedly a small car. Nevertheless, the SUV-inspired styling is certainly on-trend, while 150 mm (6”) of ground clearance should be useful when negotiating neglected urban road surfaces.

Inside, there’s space for four adults and 300 litres of luggage. A 3.5” digital display between the main instruments, remote central locking, four electric windows, six airbags and radar-controlled automatic emergency braking all appear on the standard equipment list.

However, manual air conditioning, power-adjustable door mirrors and a proper infotainment system (incorporating a 7.0” central touchscreen, satellite navigation and Android Auto / Apple CarPlay compatibility) are cost options.

Power comes from an electric motor that produces 44 bhp (33 kW / 44 PS) plus 125 Nm (92 lb-ft) of instant torque. Energy is stored in a 26.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which has an eight-year or 74,600-mile (120,000-kilometre) warranty.

Range is a mediocre 140 miles (225 kilometres) according to the WLTP Combined cycle, or 183 miles (295 kilometres) based on the less demanding WLTP City measure. If anxiety is setting in, then pressing the dashboard’s Eco button restricts output to just 30 bhp (23 kW / 31 PS) and reduces the top speed from 78 mph (125 km/h) to 62 mph (100 km/h).

Fully replenishing an empty battery takes approximately 14 hours via a normal 2.3 kW domestic socket. Unfortunately, customers will have to pay extra if they want to use any of the following quicker recharging methods:
  • 3.7 kW dedicated domestic wallbox – to 100 percent in around 8 hours 30 minutes
  • 7.4 kW dedicated domestic wallbox – to 100 percent in around 5 hours
  • 30 kW public DC facility – to 80 percent in less than 1 hour

As well as a regular retail Spring Electric, Dacia has also developed two special versions. The first is aimed at car-share operators and, to ensure durability, the seats are covered in stain-resistant artificial leather and sill protectors are fitted.

The second is called the Spring Electric Cargo. Intended for local deliveries, the back seats and the spare wheel are replaced by a plastic floor lining, four anchor rings and a wire mesh bulkhead behind the front seats. Maximum load length and payload are 1,033 mm (3’ 4”) and 325 kg (716 lb) respectively, but practicality might be limited by the still-glazed rear doors and tailgate.
