Top 10: Facts about the 2022 Hummer EV

Ten years after the demise of Hummer, General Motors has revived the nameplate for use on a zero-emissions four-door “supertruck” that runs purely on electricity.

Here are ten things worth knowing about this all-new arrival:

1. Hummer is no longer a stand-alone brand

Rather than facing the hassle and expense involved in re-establishing a completely separate marque, GM took the decision to position the Hummer EV as a model within the GMC range.

2. It’s based on GM’s Ultium Drive technologies

In most cases, customers are currently reluctant to switch to electric vehicles because of doubts about their practicality, cost or longevity. All issues ultimately connected to batteries, in other words.

Therefore, the compact 24-module Ultium battery pack is arguably the Hummer EV’s most important component. Mounted low in the chassis, its special chemistry minimises the need for expensive cobalt.

3. Two powertrain configurations will be available

Every Hummer EV comes with two electric motors (one for each axle). In addition, EV3X variants benefit from a second motor on the rear axle.

4. Output figures are spectacular

According to GM’s estimates, the aforementioned EV3X boasts 1,000 bhp (745 kW / 1,014 PS) plus 15,592 Nm (11,500 lb-ft) of torque. Consequently, the 0-60 mph (96 km/h) sprint is reckoned to take a mere three seconds.

5. Range anxiety isn’t likely to be a problem

At least 350 miles (approximately 560 kilometres) is the target. Achieving such a driving distance is absolutely critical to the Hummer EV’s success, as running out of energy in the wilderness would be disastrous.

6. Rapid recharging is possible

Those Ultium batteries can change from parallel to series mode during charging, so the Hummer EV is compatible with 800 volt, 350 kW DC public facilities. As a result, being plugged in for just ten minutes yields almost 100 miles (around 60 kilometres) of extra range.

7. Off-road ability should be impressive

Various features – some standard, some optional – are intended make tackling rough terrain much easier. As well as adaptive air suspension and 37” tyres, they include UltraVision under-body cameras to help with wheel placement and obstacle avoidance.

Another is four-wheel steering, which incorporates CrabWalk. This unique function points the front and rear wheels in the same direction at low speeds, thereby allowing diagonal movement over the ground.

8. An ‘Edition 1’ version marks the launch

Taking the three-motor EV3X as a starting point, removable roof panels, a powered back window and a six-position MultiPro tailgate all appear on an enhanced equipment list.

9. Production begins next year

GMC intends to commence manufacturing the Edition 1 during the latter part of 2021. Assembly is going to take place in the fully-modernised Detroit-Hamtramck plant.

The regular EV3X is then due in autumn 2022, followed by the two-motor EV2X in spring 2023 and the less extreme EV2 another year after that.

10. Prices have already been announced

At the moment, suggested Hummer EV retail prices (excluding tax, title, licence and dealer fees) for the United States are:
  • Hummer EV2 – $79,995
  • Hummer EV2X – $89,995
  • Hummer EV3X – $99,995
Of course, these amounts might change before deliveries start.
