Top 10: Irish car sales 2020 - winners and losers

New car registrations in Ireland fell to 88,324 units during 2020, a reduction of 24.6% versus 2019’s total. Certainly, such a downturn was largely due to the ongoing pandemic, but the impact varied significantly between brands.

Indeed, some marques managed to buck the trend. Tesla, Porsche and SsangYong all sold more vehicles year-on-year (albeit from low starting points), while Land Rover barely suffered.

At the other end of the spectrum, both Bentley and DS failed to achieve any deliveries. Of the ‘volume’ firms, Opel, Renault and Dacia recorded the largest percentage decreases. The biggest absolute decline of 2,950 units was posted by Nissan.

Despite so much upheaval, the top ten manufacturer list remained almost identical. Volkswagen stayed in first place with 10,689 units and a 12.1% market share, followed once again by Toyota (10,020 / 11.3%) and Hyundai (8,179 / 9.3%). Notably, Škoda (7,417 / 8.4%) climbed to fourth spot, swapping positions with Ford (6,790 / 7.7%).

In a similar vein, the Toyota Corolla was still the country’s most popular model. Hyundai’s Tucson retained the runner-up title, too.

Honda WSB team launch

Honda has unveiled its works team for the 2011 World Superbike championship . The announcement of Castrol as title sponsor means the return to a very familiar colour scheme for the pair of CBR1000RR Fireblade bikes, which will be ridden by Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus. As in recent years, Honda has entrusted Dutch concern Ten Kate Racing with running the factory WSB team. First thing on the Castrol Honda agenda is a two day testing session at the Motorland Aragón circuit in Spain later this week. The 2011 WSB season comprises thirteen rounds with Phillip Island, Australia hosting the opening race on 27 February.

Moto Guzzi V7 Record kit

Inspired by the 1969 V7 Record that set several speed records for Moto Guzzi, the new Record kit has been designed to give current-generation V7 models a retro endurance racer look. Included is a lightweight fibreglass front fairing (which handily uses the existing headlight), plus a replacement single seat unit that features memory foam.
