All-new Toyota GR 86 replaces the GT86

Toyota has unveiled the long-anticipated GR 86. Like the superseded GT86, this rear-wheel drive, four-seat coupé was developed in collaboration with Subaru.

One major change concerns the engine. Although it’s still a horizontally-opposed, four-cylinder unit, displacement is up from 2.0 to 2.4 litres.

Final European specifications will be confirmed at a later date, but for Japan peak output and torque are rated at 235 PS (232 bhp / 173 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) respectively. By comparison, the GT86 figures were 200 PS (197 bhp / 147 kW) and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft), so superior pace is promised.

Indeed, Toyota claims that the GR 86 can accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.3 seconds, which is 1.3 seconds quicker than before.

Keeping the car relatively light – a 1,270 kg (2,799 lb) kerb weight represents a rise of just 48 kg (105 lb) – surely helped to achieve such a significant performance improvement. Furthermore, the handling should be better too, because the body’s torsional rigidity has been increased by 50 percent.
