Kia Soul EV Boardmasters Edition unveiled
For this year’s Boardmasters surfing and music festival, Kia has built a one-off car designed for life on the coast. The pure-electric Soul EV Boardmasters Edition is actually a modified pre-production homologation vehicle that would otherwise have been scrapped.
Driving across sandy beaches should be much easier than usual, because ground clearance has risen from 153 mm (6.0”) to 310 mm (12.2”) at the front and 320 mm (12.6”) at the rear. Such an increase was achieved by altering the suspension and fitting white 16” steel wheels shod with chunky 265/75 R16 Maxxis Bighorn tyres.
Other exterior additions focus on the roof. For instance, a unique tubular steel rack can accommodate a couple of surfboards, plus it incorporates two Lazer ST4 Evolution LED spotlights. There’s also a solar panel which is connected to a stand-alone 12-volt leisure battery and a mains inverter.
While the front part of the interior is unchanged, the back seats have been removed and replaced by a white-stained spruce deck. Furthermore, opening the tailgate allows access to a fold-out wooden bench and a swing-out drying arm.
The powertrain has been left completely standard, so an electric motor delivers 204 PS (201 bhp / 150 kW) and 395 Nm (291 lb-ft) of peak torque. Energy is stored in a 64 kWh, liquid-cooled, lithium-ion polymer battery pack.
Kia will be displaying the Soul EV Boardmasters Edition at Boardmasters. The event takes place in Cornwall between the 11th and 15th of August.
