Second-gen NSX bows out with a Type S model

Production of the second-generation NSX will soon come to an end. To mark the occasion, Acura has created an enhanced Type S edition which is now the only available version.

Compared to a regular NSX, the Type S gains a carbon fibre roof panel, larger air intakes and a reshaped front splitter. At the back, there’s a more effective diffuser inspired by the NSX GT3 race car’s.

Also fitted are unique five-spoke forged alloy wheels shod with specially-developed Pirelli P-Zero tyres (sized 245/35 ZR19 for the front and 305/30 ZR20 for the rear). A slightly greater negative offset on both axles widens the tracks, benefiting the handling.

An optional Lightweight Package is being offered, too. Consisting of a high-gloss carbon fibre engine cover, extra carbon fibre cabin trim pieces, and carbon-ceramic brake discs, it reduces overall weight by 26.2 kg (57.8 lb).

The hybrid powertrain still incorporates a 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine, three electric motors and a small lithium-ion battery pack.

However, the Type S boasts improved fuel injectors, turbochargers and intercoolers. Consequently, combined output is up from 580 PS (573 bhp / 427 kW) to 608 PS (600 bhp / 447 kW), while peak torque has risen by 22 Nm (16 lb-ft) to 667 Nm (492 lb-ft).

To help acceleration, a recalibrated nine-speed dual-clutch transmission allows faster upshifts in Sport and Sport+ modes. In addition, a new rapid downshift function automatically selects the lowest possible gear ratio to match the car’s speed.

The end result is a sub-three-second 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time and a top speed of 191 mph (307 km/h).

Various chassis modifications complete the upgrades. In particular, changes to the dampers and torque-vectoring Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system are claimed to sharpen the turn-in behaviour, thanks to less body roll and brake dive.

Production of the 2022 NSX Type S is going to be limited to 350 units, with 300 of them allocated to the United States. In that market, the MSRP is $171,495 (including a $1,995 Destination Charge), or $184,495 if the Lightweight Package is specified.

Online orders are already being accepted.
