Entry-level Caterham Seven 170 launched

Fans of light cars will definitely appreciate the new Caterham Seven 170, because it can weigh as little as 440 kg (970 lb).

This replacement for the Seven 160 is small too. Overall length is 3,180 mm (10’ 5”) and, thanks to redesigned wings and narrow 155-section Avon ZT7 tyres, width is just 1,470 mm (4’ 10”).

Power comes from an updated 660 cc, three-cylinder, turbocharged Suzuki engine. 85 PS (84 bhp / 62 kW) plus 116 Nm (85 lb-ft) of torque are delivered to a live rear axle via a five-speed manual gearbox, resulting in a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of 6.9 seconds. Top speed is 105 mph (170 km/h).

Caterham is also offering the track-focussed R Pack. It’s a £1,000 option that deletes the windscreen, side screens and hood, but adds various other items. Among them are a sports suspension set-up, a limited-slip differential, and 14” black ‘Juno’ wheels with a polished lip. Furthermore, the 170R interior gains composite race seats, four-point harnesses, and a carbon fibre dashboard.
