Pure-electric 2022 Toyota bZ4X unveiled

Toyota has a long history of offering hybrids, but the bZ4X is its first purpose-built battery-electric vehicle. This all-new compact five-door SUV is also the first product from the company’s bZ (‘beyond Zero’) sub-brand.

The bZ4X sits on a dedicated platform which was developed in collaboration with Subaru. A long wheelbase benefits cabin space, while the slim under-floor water-cooled 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is an integral part of the structure.

Front-wheel drive versions feature a single 150 kW electric motor that delivers 204 PS (201 bhp / 150 kW) plus 265 Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque. The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 8.4 seconds, however top speed is restricted to 99 mph (160 km/h).

Provisional WLTP range is estimated to be in excess of 280 miles (450 kilometres), and recharging to 80 percent capacity should take around half an hour when using a 150 kW DC facility.

Several technologies are intended to maximise energy efficiency. Among them are regenerative braking (single-pedal driving is possible), a roof-mounted solar panel, and a heat pump to warm the interior.

An all-wheel drive bZ4X is going to be available too. Thanks to an 80 kW motor for each axle, total output rises to 217 PS (214 bhp / 160 kW) with 336 Nm (247 lb-ft) of torque. Consequently, the 0-62 mph time reduces to 7.7 seconds, but top speed remains unchanged.

One particularly noteworthy innovation is the bZ4X’s optional steer-by-wire system. Because there’s no physical link to the front wheels, a traditional steering wheel is replaced by a ‘One Motion Grip’ device that can achieve full steering lock with a 150° turn. According to Toyota, responsiveness and feel are actually improved compared to a conventional set-up.

The European launch of the bZ4X is due to take place on the 2nd of December, then UK customers will be able to place online reservations from the 15th of December. Prices and final specifications have yet to be confirmed.
