Smart #1 electric subcompact SUV revealed

Smart has undergone a complete transformation. Before, as a Mercedes-Benz subsidiary, it built small city cars in France. Now, Smart is a joint venture between Zhejiang Geely and Mercedes-Benz that’ll only manufacture pure-electric vehicles in China.

The first member of the new range is named the #1. This five-door subcompact SUV measures 4,270 mm (168.1”) long, 1,822 mm (71.7”) wide and 1,636 mm (64.4”) high.

Arguably some of the visual distinctiveness of previous Smart models has gone, but notable styling elements include a ‘floating halo’ roof and frameless doors with concealed electric handles.

Inside, the driver is faced by a 9.2” HD digital instrument cluster and a 10.0” head-up display. There’s also a 12.8” central touchscreen for the infotainment system which features dedicated apps and a customisable interface.

The rear-wheel drive Smart #1 is powered by a single electric motor. Peak output and torque are provisionally rated at 272 PS (268 bhp / 200 kW) and 343 Nm (253 lb-ft) respectively, resulting in a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

Anticipated maximum range according to the WLTP is 260 to 273 miles (420 to 440 kilometres), thanks to a 66 kWh lithium NMC (nickel manganese cobalt oxide) battery pack. Recharging from 10 to 80 percent capacity takes around three hours using a 22 kW AC supply, or less than 30 minutes via a public 150 kW DC facility.
