2014 Infiniti Q50 unveiled

Infiniti has revealed its new Q50 sports saloon at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A replacement for the G37, it will be competing in a tough market segment against models such as the Cadillac ATS, Lexus IS, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The Q50 isn’t a bad looking design, although arguably the assertive front end works much better than the rear. But at least it’s not bland or anonymous.

For North America, two engines are going to be available initially, both of which come with a seven-speed automatic transmission and a choice of either rear- or all-wheel drive.

The first option is a 3.7 litre petrol V6 that develops 328 bhp (245 kW / 332 PS) and 365 Nm (269 lb/ft) of torque, while the alternative is a hybrid powertrain. This combines a 302 bhp (225 kW / 306 PS) 3.5 litre petrol V6 with a 67 bhp (50 kW / 68 PS) electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Performance and efficiency figures have yet to be published.

Infiniti is promising precise handling, with Sport variants getting an even sharper suspension set-up. Indeed, the firm is keen to point out that input was provided by Sebastian Vettel as well as his fellow Formula One driver Sebastien Buemi, who was employed to test the Q50 around the Nürburgring Nordschleife during the car’s development.

North American sales are due to begin this summer. European specifications and launch dates will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
