2015 Dodge Challenger unveiled

Dodge is giving its Challenger muscle car an in-depth update for 2015.

The revised line-up, which will be launched during the third quarter of this year, comprises SXT, SXT Plus, R/T, R/T Plus, R/T Shaker and R/T Plus Shaker trim grades. Also available are the powerful but unfortunately-named 6.4 litre Scat Pack and 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker models.

Several key technical upgrades have been applied across the range. These include a recalibrated suspension set-up, the fitment of three-mode electric power steering and the switch to a lighter, cast aluminium rear axle housing. What’s more, numerous safety systems will be available on the Challenger for the first time. Among them are blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control.

Bodywork changes are limited to a redesigned grille surround, new projector headlights and restyled LED taillight clusters. On the inside, the feel is very much 1970s retro. There’s a high-set centre console and refreshed instruments that incorporate a customisable 7” TFT display. An extensive upholstery selection encompasses leather, Alcantara and a Houndstooth-pattern cloth.

The upgraded 6.4 litre Hemi V8 used in the Scat Pack versions is expected to produce 485 bhp (361 kW / 491 PS) with 644 Nm (475 lb/ft) of torque, an impressive output that Dodge says beats the Challenger’s rivals and results in a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of less than five seconds. Complementing that motor are either a six-speed manual gearbox or a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, 20” wheels, a front splitter, a rear spoiler, and stronger Brembo brakes.

Powering the Challenger R/T is a 5.7 litre Hemi V8. It delivers 375 bhp (280 kW / 380 PS) when combined with the six-speed manual gearbox, or 3 bhp (2 kW / 3 PS) less with the ZF automatic option. Alternatively, all 2015 SXT variants come with an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and a 305 bhp (227 kW / 309 PS) 3.6 litre Pentastar V6.

For a distinctive look, the Shaker package consists of a cold-air intake built into the bonnet, a Mopar air filer, polished 20” wheels, satin black graphics, special badges and sports seats. Also part of the specification is the Super Track Pak that features three-mode electronic stability control as well as improved brakes, suspension and steering.

Prices for the 2015 Dodge Challenger have yet to be confirmed.
