Audi R8 LMX limited edition revealed

Audi has unveiled the LMX, a special edition based on its existing R8 V10 Coupé.

As well as exclusive Ara Blue crystal effect paintwork and a large fixed rear spoiler, the car’s specification also includes a better engine. Indeed, improvements mean power from the 5.2 litre unit is up to 562 bhp (419 kW / 570 PS) while torque now peaks at 540 Nm (398 lb/ft).

Delivered via a seven-speed S tronic transmission and a permanent all-wheel drive system, that output is sufficient for a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 3.4 seconds and a 199 mph (320 km/h) top speed.

Among the other items of standard kit are carbon ceramic brakes that come with red anodised calipers, unique 19” wheels and plenty of carbon fibre bodywork components. On the inside, there’s black Nappa leather upholstery, contrast blue stitching, matte carbon trim pieces and Ara Blue seat backrest covers.

Audi is also using its new arrival to score a minor victory over a rival manufacturer: the R8 LMX is going to be the first production car available which uses laser light for its high beam, as it’ll just beat the similarly-equipped BMW i8 into dealers.

The technology, which augments the usual LED headlights, is claimed to offer twice the illumination range and better contrast. However it’s only active at speeds above 37 mph (60 km/h), plus a camera-sensor device is utilised to exclude other road users from the beam (thereby implying it’ll be pretty dazzling).

Orders are now being accepted for the R8 LMX ahead of the first deliveries this summer. Anybody interested had better be quick though, as only 99 examples are due to be built. Prices in the UK and Germany start at £160,025 and €210,000 respectively.
