The 2020 Ford Explorer is coming to Europe

Ford has confirmed that sales of its all-new 2020 Explorer are going to begin in Europe later this year. However, the seven-seat SUV will be built in left-hand drive form only, so availability in the UK and Ireland seems unlikely.

With no diesel option, the sole powertrain is a plug-in hybrid that comprises a 3.0 litre EcoBoost V6 petrol engine, an electric motor, a generator and a 13.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Total output is 444 bhp (330 kW / 450 PS) plus 840 Nm (620 lb/ft) of torque, which is delivered to all four wheels via a ten-speed automatic transmission. A Terrain Management System gives a choice of seven driving modes, and Hill Descent Control is fitted as standard too.

Four different settings determine how energy stored in the battery is managed:
  • EV Later – the electric motor isn’t used, so all power is supplied by the combustion engine
  • EV Charge – the battery is topped up by the combustion engine and regenerative braking
  • EV Auto – the electric motor supplements the combustion engine as required
  • EV Now – the combustion engine isn’t used, allowing zero-emission pure-electric operation for up to 25 miles (40 kilometres) in urban environments
Ford is anticipating 83.0 mpg (3.4 l/100km) and CO2 emissions of 78 g/km on the combined cycle. How those impressive figures translate to real-world conditions remains to be seen, though.

Two trim grades are being offered. ST-Line has a sporty vibe, while Platinum focusses on luxury.
