Lexus launches the battery-electric RZ 450e

Lexus has unveiled the all-new RZ 450e, a battery-electric crossover that’s based on the e-TNGA platform (which also underpins the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra).

Its powertrain comprises an electric motor for each axle and Direct4 all-wheel drive. Total output is rated at 313 PS (308 bhp / 230 kW), while peak torque is 435 Nm (320 lb-ft).

Those figures are enough for a provisional 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 5.6 seconds and a limited 99 mph (160 km/h) top speed.

Energy is stored in an under-floor lithium-ion battery pack. Thanks to a capacity of 71.4 kWh, driving range on the WLTP combined cycle is anticipated to be in excess of 250 miles (400 kilometres).

The specification of the entry-level Premium Plus Pack variant includes 20” alloy wheels, a panoramic roof, a head-up display, Link Pro infotainment and synthetic leather upholstery. Alternatively, the Takumi trim grade adds various items such as automatic and remote parking, a dimmable panoramic roof, suede upholstery and Mark Levinson premium audio.

Furthermore, the innovative One Motion Grip will be available as an option for the RZ 450e. This is a steer-by-wire system that uses a yoke instead of a conventional circular steering wheel.

UK prices aren’t due to be announced until August 2022, but Lexus is already accepting online reservations with a refundable £500 deposit. The first deliveries are expected to take place before the end of the year.
