Pure-electric 2022 Subaru Solterra revealed

Subaru has become the latest manufacturer to add a battery-electric SUV to its range. The new Solterra was developed in collaboration with Toyota, and the many similarities with the recently-unveiled bZ4X are obvious. Indeed, the technical specifications of the two models appear to be identical.

Front-wheel drive versions feature a single electric motor which produces 204 PS (201 bhp / 150 kW) plus 265 Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque. Alternatively, the all-wheel drive Solterra benefits from an 80 kW motor for each axle, resulting in a total output of 217 PS (214 bhp / 160 kW) with 336 Nm (247 lb-ft) of torque.

Regardless of the powertrain chosen, energy is stored in an under-floor 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. According to Subaru’s provisional figures, that capacity should be sufficient to yield cruising ranges of around 330 miles (530 kilometres) and 285 miles (460 kilometres) for the FWD and AWD variants respectively.
