BMW X4 unveiled

In the space of nine months BMW has created a whole family of 4 Series models. First came the Coupé, which was quickly followed by the Convertible. Then a Gran Coupé version appeared in February and now the X4 has arrived.

According to BMW’s nomenclature the X4 is a Sports Activity Coupé, which translates as a raised-height five-door hatchback. In other words it’s a more practical Gran Coupé, or a sportier 3 Series GT, or a smarter-looking X3. Whatever the new model’s niche, the description ‘shrunken X6’ springs immediately to mind.

The X4 is based on X3 underpinnings, but it has a unique stance thanks to slightly longer bodywork and a roofline that’s been lowered by 36 mm (1.4”). Among the key styling ingredients are a pair of large front bumper air intakes and a slightly awkward split swage line running along the sides.

At launch a selection of six engines is being offered, all of which are combined with the xDrive all-wheel drive system. An eight-speed automatic transmission is fitted as standard across the range, except for the xDrive 20d where it’s optional instead of a six-speed manual gearbox.

xDrive 20i 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol 181 bhp (135 kW / 184 PS)
xDrive 28i 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol 241 bhp (180 kW / 245 PS)
xDrive 35i 3.0 litre six-cylinder petrol 301 bhp (225 kW / 306 PS)
xDrive 20d 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel 187 bhp (140 kW / 190 PS)
xDrive 30d 3.0 litre six-cylinder diesel 254 bhp (190 kW / 258 PS)
xDrive 35d 3.0 litre six-cylinder diesel 308 bhp (230 kW / 313 PS)

However, only the diesel units are going to be available in the UK. Buyers here will have a choice of SE, xLine and M Sport trim grades, with all featuring heated front seats, xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors, the Business Media infotainment package, Variable Sport Steering and an automatically activated tailgate.

Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin during July and prices start from £36,590.
