Ducati Desmosedici GP14 revealed

Ducati has unveiled the bike that Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso will be riding in this year’s MotoGP championship. Called (for obvious reasons) the Desmosedici GP14, it’s a controversial contender.

That’s because Ducati has elected to run in the ‘Open’ class rather than the ‘Factory’ category, which brings with it certain advantages. They include a race fuel allowance of 24 rather than 20 litres, a higher engine quota, the possibility to use standardised ECU software and the availability of a softer tyre compound.

There’s probably one factor above all others that swayed the team’s decision, though. As ‘Open’ competitors, Ducati can continue to develop the Desmosedici GP14’s chassis and engine throughout the season. Based on recent performances, it’s going to be necessary.

Indeed, Ducati last won a MotoGP riders’ title with Casey Stoner back in 2007. Whether the Desmosedici GP14 can repeat that success remains to be seen.

Honda WSB team launch

Honda has unveiled its works team for the 2011 World Superbike championship . The announcement of Castrol as title sponsor means the return to a very familiar colour scheme for the pair of CBR1000RR Fireblade bikes, which will be ridden by Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus. As in recent years, Honda has entrusted Dutch concern Ten Kate Racing with running the factory WSB team. First thing on the Castrol Honda agenda is a two day testing session at the Motorland Aragón circuit in Spain later this week. The 2011 WSB season comprises thirteen rounds with Phillip Island, Australia hosting the opening race on 27 February.

Moto Guzzi V7 Record kit

Inspired by the 1969 V7 Record that set several speed records for Moto Guzzi, the new Record kit has been designed to give current-generation V7 models a retro endurance racer look. Included is a lightweight fibreglass front fairing (which handily uses the existing headlight), plus a replacement single seat unit that features memory foam.
