Volkswagen marks forty years of the Polo

In 1975, Volkswagen decided to start making a more basic version of the Audi 50. It was called Polo, a nameplate which of course is still with us today.

Over five generations Polo has become much more sophisticated and refined. That’s borne out by the Polo Original, a “limited premium special edition model for demanding customers” created to celebrate the car’s 40th birthday.

Identifying features comprise a set of 16” ‘Portago’ alloy wheels, LED headlights, darkened taillight clusters, body-colour door mirror caps and a gloss black grille. Unique ‘Original’ badges and doorsill kick plates are also fitted.

Inside there’s a distinctly retro feel. The seats are covered in faux leather with black and orange tartan inserts, plus some of the trim pieces are body-coloured.

Numerous items on the standard equipment list would have been inconceivable to buyers of the very first Polo. These include a rear reversing camera, climate control and the Front Assist traffic monitoring system.

Available only in Germany, production of the Polo Original is being limited to 1,000 units.

Prices start from €19,950. Volkswagen reckons that amount represents a customer saving of €1,119, given the extra specification.
