Camry to replace Avensis in Europe
With production of the UK-built Avensis due to end soon, Toyota has had to decide whether or not to continue offering a non-premium large car. It is, after all, a market segment that has suffered significantly from reduced demand in recent years.
The chosen solution is actually rather sensible. Rather than develop a new model, the existing Camry saloon is going to be introduced across western Europe during 2019. This Avensis substitute – which is based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture platform – will be imported from Japan.
Toyota is intending to equip every Camry sold here with a ‘self-charging’ (i.e. non-plug-in) hybrid powertrain. Comprising a 2.5 litre, four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, low CO2 emissions are promised. That should appeal to fleet customers, but the lack of a five-door estate version might alienate some potential users.
Full specifications and pricing details have yet to be announced.
