2020 Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 revealed
To recognise a series of styling and technology updates, Volkswagen’s Transporter T6 is being renamed T6.1.
The first member of the range to receive the improvements is the luxurious Multivan, which is sold as the Caravelle in the UK. (Rather confusingly, the slightly more utilitarian nine-seat Caravelle that’s offered in Germany is known as the Transporter Shuttle here.)
Exterior design changes are concentrated at the front end. An obviously larger air intake is matched with slimmer headlights, while some extra chrome accents add visual interest.
The infotainment and connectivity enhancements are much more significant. For example, for the first time, some variants feature a Digital Cockpit that uses a 10.25” configurable screen instead of conventional instruments. In addition, Volkswagen’s third-generation Discover Media (8.0” touchscreen) and Discover Pro (9.2” touchscreen) navigation systems are now available.
A switch from hydraulic power steering to an electromechanical set-up might not sound particularly momentous, but some extra driving aids can be fitted as a result. They include Cross Wind Assist, Lane Assist, Park Assist and Trailer Assist.
Initially, every Transporter T6.1 is going to be powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engine. Customers will be able to choose an output of 88 bhp (66 kW / 90 PS), 108 bhp (81 kW / 110 PS) or 148 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS).
Alternatively, if better performance is needed, then a 2.0 litre bi-turbo unit delivers 196 bhp (146 kW / 199 PS) via a DSG dual-clutch transmission. 4Motion all-wheel drive remains an option for both this and the aforementioned 150 PS version.
Looking to the future, Volkswagen is already planning a pure-electric model. Developed in conjunction with ABT, it combines a 110 bhp (82 kW / 112 PS) motor with either a 38.8 kWh or a 77.6 kWh battery pack. A range of up to 250 miles (around 400 kilometres) is promised, based on the NEDC measure.
Market launches for the new Transporter T6.1 are due to begin this autumn.
