UK prices for the 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulietta

It’s still very charismatic, but the nine-year-old Alfa Romeo Giulietta is in danger of becoming outdated. Unfortunately, the car’s cause won’t be helped by some just-announced changes.

A revised engine line-up is probably the most serious flaw. In the course of complying with the latest Euro 6d emissions regulations, the 148 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS) and 167 bhp (125 kW / 170 PS) 1.4 litre petrol units have been dropped. That leaves only the least powerful 118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS) version plus a couple of diesels. Not an appealing selection, in other words.

There’s also a slightly modified trim grade structure. All variants now come as standard with 17” alloy wheels, cruise control, dual-zone air conditioning and rear parking sensors.

Upgrading from the entry-level Super to the Speciale adds some cosmetic enhancements including side skirts, aluminium pedals, sports seats and part-Alcantara upholstery.

The range-topping Veloce gains unique bumpers, front parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, a set of 18” wheels, yellow Brembo brake calipers and twin exhaust pipes. Although a satellite navigation system is fitted too, its 6.5” screen is small by modern standards. A dearth of the sophisticated driver aids present in many rival models is another potential drawback.
