Škoda introduces the pure-electric CitigoE iV

To coincide with the launch of its iV electromobility sub-brand, Škoda has unveiled the CitigoE iV. The manufacturer’s first pure-electric production vehicle doesn’t seem to be a particularly practical proposition, though.

Five doors, four seats and a 250-litre boot are certainly all very useful. Performance from the 81 bhp (61 kW / 82 PS) electric motor will be adequate in most situations too, as accelerating from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) needs 12.5 seconds and the top speed is 80 mph (130 km/h).

However, the under-floor, 60 Ah, 168-cell, lithium-ion battery pack has a modest capacity of 36.8 kWh. Consequently, range according to the WLTP measure is just 165 miles (265 kilometres). That’s likely to be fine for local driving, but longer journeys are going to require careful planning (or another car).

To compound the problem, recharging is not a quick process. Even with a Combined Charging System cable connected to a 40 kW DC fast-charger, replenishing the battery to 80% takes an hour. Alternatively, a 7.2 kW AC wall box and a 2.3 kW AC home unit do the same task in 4 hours 8 minutes and 12 hours 37 minutes respectively.

In fairness, this model’s appeal can only be fully assessed after Škoda has announced prices. There shouldn’t be too much of a wait for that information, because deliveries are due to begin during the second half of this year.
