Toyota launches the Proace City

Toyota’s commercial vehicle collaboration with Groupe PSA continues with the arrival of the Proace City. As can be seen from the images, this new compact van is essentially a rebadged version of the existing Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Vauxhall / Opel Combo (albeit with unique front-end styling).

Buyers will certainly face plenty of choice. The panel van, for instance, is being offered with body lengths of either 4,403 mm (173.3”) or 4,753 mm (187.1”). Freight volumes are 3.3 m3 (116.5 cu. ft.) and 3.9 m3 (137.7 cu. ft.) respectively, but both variants are able to carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs).

In the cab, two individual seats or a three-seat bench can be specified. An option for the latter arrangement is a Smart Cargo system. This allows a load length of up to 3,440 mm (135.4”), thanks to a folding passenger-seat backrest and a bulkhead hatch. Customers get to pick either asymmetrical side-hinged rear doors (glazed or unglazed) or a top-hinged tailgate.

The long-wheelbase van is also available in crew cab guise. However, if transporting people is the main requirement, then there’s the Proace City Verso. Regardless of whether the long or short body is selected, this model can feature two-row / five-seat or three-row / seven-seat layouts. Easy access to the boot space is possible courtesy of an opening tailgate window, and an extra-cost panoramic roof with overhead storage promises a light and airy interior ambience.

Which powertrain to go for is another crucial decision. Toyota’s extensive line-up includes petrol and diesel engines with outputs ranging from 74 bhp (55 kW / 75 PS) to 128 bhp (95 kW / 130 PS), as well as five-speed manual, six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Some notable driver assistance technologies have been developed for the Proace City. For example, Smart Active Vision uses two cameras and a ceiling-mounted 5” display to give a clear view alongside and behind the vehicle, while Smart Load Indicator warns when the van’s gross weight limit is in danger of being exceeded.

UK prices have yet to be announced.
