Last year, Volkswagen registered 1,235 examples of the California camper in the UK. Its popularity is set to continue with an updated version which is based on the new Transporter T6.1 van.

As well as refreshed front-end styling, the 2020 California gains plenty of additional technology. For instance, an integrated eSIM makes online infotainment services possible, while fully digital instruments are available for the first time.

A switch from hydraulic to electromechanical power steering might not sound significant, but this change brings some major benefits. They include potentially lower fuel consumption figures and the ability to offer advanced driving aids such as Lane Assist, Park Assist, Trailer Assist and Cross Wind Assist.

The traditional interior layout – a side kitchen, a sliding rear bench that converts into a double bed, an elevating roof housing two extra berths – remains unaltered. However, the ceiling-mounted control unit for the camping functions has been redesigned.

Power is provided by a 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engine. Customers will be able to choose from a range of outputs up to 196 bhp (146 kW / 199 PS).

The 2020 California is going to be officially unveiled at next month’s Caravan Salon show in Düsseldorf. Prices have yet to be announced.
