UK prices for the 2020 SsangYong Korando
As with every other member of the current SsangYong range, the all-new Korando has distinctive styling that might divide opinion. However, prospective buyers shouldn’t dismiss this five-seat C-segment SUV based on looks alone, because it could represent decent value for money.
Four equipment levels are being offered. The entry-level ELX comes with alloy wheels, automatic lights, rain-sensing wipers, a DAB radio, Bluetooth and a 3.5” LCD information display. Also fitted are numerous safety technologies such as autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance and traffic sign recognition.
Moving up to the Ventura sees the appearance of cloth and faux leather upholstery, heated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and an electronic parking brake. The dashboard features a Blaze Cockpit 10.25” LCD colour instrument cluster, as well as a separate 8” touchscreen for the infotainment system that’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible.
The Pioneer variant is aimed specifically at customers who regularly need to haul a caravan or trailer, hence a towing capacity of two tonnes. Compared to the Ventura, the Pioneer gains a heated steering wheel while losing the Blaze Cockpit.
Most luxurious is the Ultimate. This takes the Ventura and adds full leather upholstery, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, dual-zone air conditioning, a 9” HD infotainment screen and TomTom satellite navigation. LED headlights and privacy glass complete the package.
Things become slightly more complicated when considering the powertrain options. Initially, the sole available combination is a 1.6 litre diesel engine that delivers 134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS) plus 324 Nm (238 lb/ft) of peak torque via a three-mode, six-speed automatic transmission. Either front- or all-wheel drive can be specified, though only in conjuction with the Pioneer and Ultimate trim grades.
By the end of 2019, a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol unit producing 160 bhp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 280 Nm (206 lb/ft) is going to join the line-up. Likewise, this will be paired with an automatic transmission, but a six-speed manual alternative is expected to arrive in early 2020.
As can be seen from the list below, on-the-road prices start at just under £20k and reach almost £32k:
