Hymer VisionVenture concept unveiled

Arguably the most interesting exhibit at the 2019 Düsseldorf Caravan Salon is the new Hymer VisionVenture. This ingenious concept vehicle – which is based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis – could be described as a cross between a camper van and an A-class motorhome.

At first glance, the front-end styling looks familiar because it uses the Sprinter’s doors, headlights and grille. However, the windscreen has been shifted forward, so the pillars and bonnet profile are unique.

The main bodywork also has some unusual features. For instance, the elevating roof is raised using inflatable walls instead of conventional gas struts. Either heated or cooled air can fill them in around a minute and, as they’re almost seven centimetres (nearly three inches) thick, insulation is significantly enhanced.

At the back, a large split tailgate complements the generous side windows. When opened, the upper and lower portions sit flush with the roof and floor respectively, thereby creating two small deck areas on different levels.

Another notable aspect is the dark green Chromacool paintwork. Developed by BASF, its infrared-reflective properties can reduce exterior surface temperatures by up to 20°C (68°F). The protective 3D-printed body cladding is equally important, because the four-wheel drive VisionVenture should be capable of travelling over rough terrain.

Remarkably, the inside boasts a proper wooden staircase that’s actually part of the side-mounted kitchen unit. Opposite is a fully-equipped wash room which has a special wall covering called Veneo Slate. Designed to be both light and flexible, this BASF invention combines an extremely thin layer of natural stone with plastic.

The rest of the layout is fairly traditional, with a couple of inward-facing sofas occupying the rearmost portion. Nevertheless, unexpected material choices abound, including concrete flooring and bamboo panelling.

While there are no immediate plans to manufacture the VisionVenture, Christian Bauer, President of Hymer, has said: “We are confident that we will be able to introduce some elements from this array of innovative and extremely customer-friendly solutions into series production in the not too distant future.”
