Lexus launches the pure-electric UX 300e

Lexus has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle. The UX 300e – which looks identical to the existing UX Hybrid – is destined to become a key element of the brand’s ‘Lexus Electrified’ strategy.

A front-mounted electric motor produces 201 bhp (150 kW / 203 PS) plus 300 Nm (221 lb/ft) of torque. Anticipated acceleration and top speed figures have yet to be released, but “excellent on-road performance” is promised.

Arguably more important is this SUV’s lithium-ion battery pack. Installed beneath the cabin floor and benefiting from a temperature management system, capacity is a generous 54.3 kWh.

Range according to the NEDC measure is expected to be around 250 miles (400 kilometres). While that might appear sufficient, any meaningful assessment of ‘real world’ practicality will have to wait until the equivalent WLTP number is published.

There’s no information about recharging times, either. However, Lexus has already confirmed that a plugged-in UX 300e can accept DC current up to 50 kW.

To go with the new electric powertrain, the UX bodyshell gains additional bracing and extra sound insulation. The dampers are recalibrated, too.

UX 300e sales are due to begin first in China, sometime next year. Prospective customers in the UK are going to have to wait until 2021 before taking delivery.

Honda WSB team launch

Honda has unveiled its works team for the 2011 World Superbike championship . The announcement of Castrol as title sponsor means the return to a very familiar colour scheme for the pair of CBR1000RR Fireblade bikes, which will be ridden by Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus. As in recent years, Honda has entrusted Dutch concern Ten Kate Racing with running the factory WSB team. First thing on the Castrol Honda agenda is a two day testing session at the Motorland Aragón circuit in Spain later this week. The 2011 WSB season comprises thirteen rounds with Phillip Island, Australia hosting the opening race on 27 February.
