The Outlander PHEV Reflex Plus Commercial

A van conversion of a plug-in hybrid SUV with permanent four-wheel drive can be described as a rather niche product. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Commercial is.

Thus far, it has only been available in Reflex guise, which actually comes with a decent level of equipment. Keyless entry and ignition, automatic lights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, cruise control and rear parking sensors all appear on the standard kit list.

Behind a full-height bulkhead, a flat load space measures 1.65 m (5’ 5”) long by 1.00 m (3’ 3”) wide between the wheel arches. Maximum payload is 500 kg (1,102 lbs).

For 2020 the Commercial’s appeal is set to broaden, thanks to the introduction of the better-appointed Reflex Plus trim grade. This new variant gains an alloy wheel upgrade from 16” to 18”, a reversing camera and an infotainment system that incorporates an 8” touchscreen as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Like the passenger-carrying Outlander PHEV, the powertrain comprises a 2.4 litre four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, an electric motor for each axle and an automatic transmission. Electrical energy is stored in a 13.8 kWh under-floor lithium-ion battery pack, which can be replenished to 80 percent capacity in 25 minutes using a rapid charge facility.

Unlike the passenger-carrying Outlander PHEV, the Commercial qualifies for a government subsidy. Indeed, after applying a generous Plug-in Van Grant of £7,905, the Reflex Plus Commercial has an on-the-road price of £25,131 (excluding VAT).

The equivalent figure for the more basic Reflex Commercial is £24,298.
