The 2020 Up! GTI is available in the UK

Volkswagen has announced a revised Up! city car range for 2020, which once again includes the temporarily-absent GTI version.

The entry-level model – just called Up! – comes with 15” ‘Fortaleza’ alloy wheels, curtain airbags, a multi-function camera and manual air conditioning. Also fitted is a Composition Media system. This incorporates a 5” colour screen, a DAB radio, an SD card slot and a USB input, but its functionality can only be fully enjoyed by pairing a smartphone via Bluetooth and a dedicated app.

A 1.0 litre, three-cylinder petrol engine delivers 59 bhp (44 kW / 60 PS) plus 95 Nm (70 lb/ft) of torque via a five-speed manual gearbox. The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 14.9 seconds and a 100 mph (162 km/h) top speed suggest that performance is merely adequate.

However, most customers are more likely to be interested in the WLTP combined cycle figure of 51.5 mpg (5.5 l/100km), achieved while emitting 124 g/km of CO2.

That same powertrain is installed in the R-Line, a new sporty-looking variant. It features a bespoke front bumper, a black roof panel, black door mirror caps, black 16” ‘Triangle’ alloys (17” ‘Polygon’ rims are optional), lowered suspension and heated front seats.

Anybody requiring extra pace will have to choose the GTI, which is distinguished by a set of 17” ‘Oswald’ wheels, side stripes and ‘Jacara’ cloth upholstery. Thanks to the addition of a turbocharger, output from the 1.0 litre motor is boosted to 114 bhp (85 kW / 115 PS) and peak torque becomes 200 Nm (148 lb/ft). A six-speed manual transmission is part of the enhanced specification too.

Consequently, the 0-62 mph sprint can be completed in 8.8 seconds and up to 122 mph (197 km/h) is possible. Remarkably, the GTI manages to boast better efficiency as well, if the WLTP metrics of 53.3 mpg (5.3 l/100km) and 120 g/km are to be believed.
