Top 10: UK car sales 2019 - winners and losers
Total new car registrations in the UK fell from 2,367,147 in 2018 to 2,311,140 in 2019. Nevertheless, some manufacturers managed to post decent percentage increases (even if several of them had very low starting points).
There are a few familiar names on the top ten winners’ table. MG appears for the sixth year running, for example, although its market share was still relatively small at 0.6%. Volvo and Seat are back again, too.
The broad variety of brands is a particularly notable feature of this list. At one end of the spectrum is Dacia (which sold 6,782 more units than in 2018), while more premium marques are represented by Porsche and Bentley.
Of course, numerous firms underperformed versus the overall average.
Infiniti was the worst for a second year running, but that was to be expected given its imminent withdrawal from western Europe. Smart, SsangYong, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and DS also succeeded in retaining ‘top ten loser’ status.
Significant additions for 2019 included Mitsubishi and Honda. The latter’s result could have been due partly to poor public sentiment, following the decision to shut the company’s UK plant in Swindon.
