MSO creates two special Elva Theme liveries
Last year, McLaren Automotive acquired the rights to the Elva name for use on a new open-cockpit, two-seat Ultimate Series car. Doing so revived an historical association between the brands that produced various McLaren-Elva models during the 1960s.
Built around a bespoke carbon fibre chassis, the 2020 Elva is the lightest ever street-legal McLaren. Its bodywork – made from three main carbon fibre panels – incorporates a dynamic rear spoiler, deployable roll-over protection and a speed-dependant Active Air Management System.
AAMS combines an inlet just above the front splitter, an outlet between the headlights and a moveable carbon fibre deflector. Consequently, airflow is guided over and around the cabin, negating the need for a glass windscreen (although one is available as an option).
The Elva is “ferociously fast” according to McLaren. Such a description is certainly believable, as power comes from a 4.0 litre V8 engine with twin turbochargers and a quad-exit Inconel and titanium exhaust. Indeed, an output of 804 bhp (600 kW / 815 PS) means that the 0-124 mph (200 km/h) sprint takes just 6.7 seconds.
Originally, the intention was to offer 399 examples of the Elva, but that figure has since been reduced to 249.
It’s anticipated that many customers will call on McLaren Special Operations to personalise their purchases. To preview what’s possible, MSO has unveiled a couple of ‘Theme’ designs: the M1A Theme is inspired by the car driven by Bruce McLaren at the Canadian Sports Car Grand Prix in 1964, while the M6A Theme evokes his 1967 Can-Am series winner.
UK prices for the Elva start at £1,425,000 (including VAT).
