The Toyota Highlander is coming to the UK

From early next year, Toyota is going to begin offering the seven-seat Highlander in several European markets. It’s certainly big – indeed, an overall length of 4,950 mm (16’ 3”) means that this SUV is as large as a BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery or Volvo XC90.

Consequently, practicality should be a strong selling point. Boot space is 658 litres, for instance, but cargo capacity almost triples to 1,909 litres after folding down the two rear benches. For those who need to tow, maximum trailer weight is an impressive two tonnes (4,409 lbs).

The sole powertrain will be a hybrid set-up which combines a 2.5 litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, an electric motor for each axle, a nickel-metal hydride battery pack and AWD-i intelligent all-wheel drive. Total system output is provisionally rated at 241 bhp (180 kW / 244 PS).

According to the WLTP measure, the Highlander is expected to achieve 42.8 mpg (6.6 l/100km) on the combined cycle while emitting 146 g/km of CO2. Other important figures such as range in pure-electric mode remain unknown, though.

Similarly, UK prices and final specifications haven’t been confirmed yet.
