Volkswagen introduces the Nivus crossover
Volkswagen has previously designed and built plenty of models in South America, but none of them have ever been offered in Europe. The all-new Nivus is going to change that situation.
Production of this ‘crossover utility vehicle’ – which mixes SUV and coupé styling cues – is about to begin in Brazil. Later, during the second half of 2021, assembly will also start at a European location. Sales in the UK seem unlikely, though.
The five-seat Nivus sits on the same MQB modular platform that underpins the Polo and similarly-sized T-Cross. In fact, at 4,266 mm (167.9”) from bumper to bumper, it’s just 31 mm (1.2”) longer than a T-Cross. However, with a height of 1,493 mm (58.7”), the Nivus is 91 mm (3.5”) lower.
Power comes from a locally-manufactured ‘200 TSI’ engine. Capable of running on either petrol or ethanol, this 999 cc three-cylinder unit delivers up to 126 bhp (94 kW / 128 PS) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of peak torque via a six-speed automatic transmission.
Specification highlights include an Active Info Display (instead of conventional instruments) and a Brazilian-developed ‘VW Play’ infotainment system. They use a pair of 10” screens, thereby creating a fully digital dashboard.
LED lights front and rear, keyless entry, a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control and self-activating emergency braking are among the other features available for the Nivus.
