Top 10: UK car sales Q2 2020
With most car dealers in England reopening during June, registrations have tentatively begun to rise again after a period of enforced stagnation. However, as can be seen from the graph below, 2020’s cumulative total is down by almost a half compared to the same period last year.
The Fleet and Business segments are faring slightly worse than Private sales, but it’s still too early to detect any significant trends. Nevertheless, companies and households alike are probably going to be extra cautious about buying (or financing) large-value items over the coming months.
Amongst all the gloom there was some positive news for suppliers of alternative-fuelled vehicles. Battery-electric volumes, for instance, have more than doubled year-on-year. Indeed, the combined BEV, PHEV and HEV market share now stands at 13.7%.
Although the past few months produced exceptionally abnormal best-seller lists, the Ford Fiesta demonstrated consistency by finishing the first half of 2020 at the top of the table.
Even so, it’s worth noting that the supermini sector has recently become extremely competitive. In fact, the three most popular models in June were the Vauxhall Corsa (4,528 units), Ford Fiesta (4,386) and Toyota Yaris (4,200).
