Peugeot 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered unveiled
‘Peugeot Sport Engineered’ is a bit of a mouthful, but that’s the name chosen by the French firm for a new family of high-performance electrified cars.
The first of them is the 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered (or PSE for short), which will be available in Fastback (five-door hatchback) and SW (estate) guises. Identifying features include a unique grille, 20” wheels and a gloss black rear diffuser. Nappa leather and Alcantara upholstery, front sports seats and an upgraded audio system are among the interior highlights.
A plug-in hybrid powertrain comprises a 1.6 litre petrol engine, two electric motors (one for each axle) and an automatic transmission. Total output is rated at 355 bhp (265 kW / 360 PS) with 520 Nm (383 lb-ft) of torque.
Thanks partly to traction-enhancing all-wheel drive, acceleration from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 5.2 seconds. Perhaps more impressive – and certainly more relevant – is the 50 - 74 mph (80 - 120 km/h) increment, because it can be completed in just 3.0 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
According to the WLTP Combined measure, the 508 PSE achieves 139 mpg (2.03 l/100km) while emitting 46 g/km of CO2.
The 11.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack fully recharges in less than two hours via a dedicated 7 kW wall box, but the time required increases to around seven hours if a standard domestic socket is used instead. Once that’s done, the zero-emissions range in Electric mode is up to 26 miles (42 kilometres).
Peugeot has yet to confirm prices for the 508 PSE.
