The new MG5 EV is a pure-electric estate car

Chinese manufacturer MG will soon find out if there’s much demand in the UK for an electric C-segment estate. The just-unveiled MG5 EV isn’t really an MG, though. It’s actually a rebadged version of the Roewe Ei5, a model that’s based on a modified General Motors platform.

An electric motor sends 154 bhp (115 kW / 156 PS) plus 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque to the front wheels through a single-speed transmission. Performance should be more than adequate for most people, as the MG5 EV is able to sprint from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a rapid 7.7 seconds. The official top speed is 115 mph (185 km/h).

Energy is stored in a water-cooled, underfloor-mounted, 52.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Of course, real-world range is going to depend on numerous factors, including the driving mode selected (Eco, Normal or Sport) and the severity setting for the regenerative braking.

According to the WLTP measure – which is intended to provide a reliable indication – the MG can travel for a very practical 214 miles (345 kilometres) on the Combined cycle. That figure becomes 276 miles (445 kilometres) on the less challenging Urban test.

Recharging times are likely to be a key consideration for prospective customers. The quickest solution is to use a public DC facility that replenishes from empty to 80 percent capacity in 50 minutes.

Alternatively, a full recharge at home with a Type 2 connection and a dedicated 7 kW wallbox takes 8 hours 30 minutes. A normal domestic socket should be considered a last resort, because the same process would require 18 hours to complete.

MG 5 EV (2021) Dashboard

MG is offering a choice of Excite or Exclusive trim grades.

As standard, both feature 16” alloy wheels, automatic headlights, rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, cruise control and a 7” driver information display. Also fitted is an infotainment system incorporating an 8” touchscreen, Bluetooth, a DAB radio, six speakers and Android Auto / Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Among the extra items found on the Exclusive variant are automatic wipers, silver roof bars, power-folding door mirrors, keyless entry, climate control, satellite navigation, heated front seats and “leather-style” upholstery.
