Updated 2021 Hyundai i30 N revealed
Hyundai has given its medium-sized performance car some styling and technical enhancements. Still offered in hatchback and fastback forms, the 2021 i30 N gains a redesigned grille and LED headlights.
As before, the regular version features a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 246 bhp (184 kW / 250 PS) plus 353 Nm (260 lb-ft) of peak torque via a six-speed manual gearbox.
To better take advantage of such potential, both the steering and suspension have been recalibrated.
Specifying the Performance Package brings numerous benefits. For starters, output and torque rise to 276 bhp (205 kW / 280 PS) and 392 Nm (289 lb-ft) respectively. Incidentally, those figures represent increases of 5 bhp (3 kW / 5 PS) and 39 Nm (29 lb-ft) compared to the superseded model.
Consequently, an i30 N equipped with the Performance Package can now accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.9 seconds, a reduction of 0.2 seconds. Top speed remains at 155 mph (250 km/h), though.
Other Performance Package components include an N Corner Carving electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, larger front brake discs, new lightweight 19” forged alloy wheels and Pirelli P-Zero tyres.
A particularly significant change is the introduction of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Available in conjunction with the Performance Package as an alternative to the aforementioned six-speeder, it has automatic and manual modes (the latter using either steering wheel paddles or the gear stick).
What’s more, the DCT boasts three extra functions: N Grin Shift unleashes maximum power for 20 seconds after pressing a button on the steering wheel, N Power Shift prevents torque reductions when up-shifting, and N Track Sense Shift optimises gear selection and shift timing only when conditions allow.
To further tempt customers, N Light Seats are a notable addition to the options list. Covered in leather and Alcantara, they provide generous levels of lateral support while weighing 2.2 kg (4.8 lbs) less than the standard items.
The i30 N is due to arrive at European dealers early next year, but Hyundai has yet to announce prices.
